A trackpad has about ten centimetres of travel to cover a whole display, so the pointer has to move fast. Fine control isn't poor because you set it up wrong — the geometry decides for you.

At a desk you would reach for a mouse, or drop the sensitivity and sweep a bigger area. On a tray table, a train seat or a hotel bed, neither is available. Holding a key is: the same swipe covers a quarter of the distance, and the edge stops sliding out from under you.

It works the same way for a trackball, a mousepad, or any desk too small to sweep across.

What are you working on?

The problem is the same everywhere: too many targets, too few pixels. Only what sits under the pointer changes.

The right handle, first try.

Trim, roll, slip and the fade handle all live within a few pixels of the same edge. Slow the pointer and take the one you meant, without zooming into the cut and back out again.

Audio stacks the same way: region edges, fade curves, automation nodes and warp markers all land on the same point of the timeline. Get the one you're after with the whole arrangement still in view.

A gearbox for your pointer.

Hold your key and the pointer switches to a lower gear: the same hand movement now covers a quarter of the distance. Like a bike on a hill, you trade ground covered for control — adjustable from barely damped to a crawl. The pixels don't move. Your hand just covers fewer of them, so every hover zone is effectively four times further apart, and your zoom level never changes.

Let go, and you're back to full speed.

It sits in the menu bar or the tray and applies everywhere at once — it isn't a plugin for one application. And it scales pointer movement itself, so it doesn't care whether a mouse, a trackpad, a trackball or a pen produced it.

Zoom in, edit, zoom out

It works, but it makes precision and overview mutually exclusive, dozens of times an hour. Switch to a lower gear instead — a quarter of the distance for the same movement — and the view never moves.

Nudging with the arrow keys

Discrete steps, a different shortcut in every application, and your hand has to leave the pointer to reach them. SpeedSwitch is continuous, the same everywhere, and your hand stays where it was.

Turning the sensitivity down

Then everything is slow all day, including the ninety percent of the time you only want to cross the screen. SpeedSwitch is slow while you hold it and normal the rest of the time.

“Just buy a mouse”

Useless advice on a tray table, and no help to a trackpad, a trackball or a pen. SpeedSwitch works with whatever is already under your hand.

What it doesn't do

It won't help your aim

SpeedSwitch adjusts the system pointer, so it has no effect in games that read the mouse through raw input — which is most of the competitive ones. It is built for tools, not for games.

It isn't tremor-filtering software

Scaling movement down scales a tremor down with it, and Inverted mode suits that well. But it scales everything uniformly — it doesn't separate intent from shake the way dedicated tremor software does.

macOS will ask for Accessibility permission

Watching pointer movement system-wide requires it — the same permission any window manager or shortcut utility asks for. You grant it once. It is also why this cannot be a Mac App Store app.

That is how every Zentru Systems product is built, and SpeedSwitch is no exception. It watches pointer movement to do its job and that is where it ends: it does not read what you type, does not record your screen, and does not send your input anywhere.

What we do collect is anonymous product analytics — app launches, whether the key actually got used, which settings people change. No account, no personal data, no device fingerprint, no tracking across sites. It tells us whether the app is working for people, and nothing else.

Questions

Does it work on a laptop trackpad?

Yes, and that is the case it was built for. A trackpad has to cover a whole display with a few centimetres of travel, so fine control is poor by construction — and unlike a mouse there is no sensitivity button or bigger desk to fall back on. Scrolling, pinch-zoom and swipes are left alone.

Doesn't my editor already have a fine-adjust modifier?

Modifier keys refine a value once you've already grabbed something. They don't help you grab the right thing in the first place. SpeedSwitch works before the click, in every app — including plugin interfaces that never implemented a fine mode at all.

Isn't this what the DPI button on a gaming mouse does?

Same idea, but it is tied to one device, it's a mode you have to remember to switch back out of, and it does nothing for a trackpad or a pen tablet — which is exactly where the problem is worst. It also does nothing about pointer acceleration: your system still stretches a quick movement and compresses a slow one, so the same hand movement doesn't reliably cover the same distance no matter which DPI step you picked. This is momentary, in software, and works with whatever you already use.

Does it work with a drawing tablet?

Yes. A pen is direct but not precise — SpeedSwitch is the missing half.

How does the trial count down?

In usage days, not calendar days. A day only counts once you actually use it — leave it untouched for a week and the trial doesn't move. What you get is days of real work, not a countdown that runs out while you're busy with something else.

Which apps does it work in?

All of them. It operates below the application layer, so it doesn't need to know anything about the software you're using.

Is it on the Mac App Store?

No. The Accessibility permission SpeedSwitch needs isn't available to sandboxed App Store apps, so it's sold directly.

Linux?
